ITC Reconciliation Made Easy: GSTR-2B vs Your Purchase Register

A step-by-step guide to reconciling input tax credit—preventing mismatches, unwanted notices, and ITC reversals.

Input Tax Credit (ITC) reconciliation is one of the most overlooked—and most consequential—monthly tasks for any GST-registered business. Claim more than what's reflected in GSTR-2B and you risk a notice; claim less and you're leaving working capital on the table. Here's how to keep this process clean every month.

What Is GSTR-2B?

GSTR-2B is an auto-generated, static statement reflecting the ITC available to you based on the returns filed by your suppliers. Unlike GSTR-2A, which updates dynamically, GSTR-2B is frozen for a given month—making it the reference document for claiming ITC in GSTR-3B.

The Reconciliation Process

  1. Download GSTR-2B for the relevant month from the GST portal.
  2. Export your purchase register from your accounting software for the same period.
  3. Match invoice-wise: compare supplier GSTIN, invoice number, invoice value, and tax amount between both records.
  4. Categorise mismatches into: invoices missing in GSTR-2B (supplier hasn't filed), invoices missing in your books (you haven't recorded a valid purchase), and value mismatches.
  5. Follow up with suppliers whose invoices are missing or under-reported, since unfiled supplier returns directly block your ITC.
  6. Claim only matched ITC in GSTR-3B for the month, and track pending items for follow-up.
Why this matters: Under Section 16(2)(aa) of the CGST Act, ITC can only be claimed if the supplier has reported the invoice in their GSTR-1 and it reflects in your GSTR-2B. Claiming credit not reflected there can result in demand notices with interest and penalty.

Common Mismatch Scenarios

ScenarioLikely CauseAction
Invoice in books, missing in 2BSupplier hasn't filed GSTR-1, or filed lateFollow up with supplier; defer ITC claim until reflected
Invoice in 2B, missing in booksPurchase not recorded, or duplicate vendor entryVerify with the vendor; record if genuine
Value mismatchData entry error on either sideCross-check with original invoice and correct accordingly

Best Practices for Smooth Reconciliation

  • Reconcile monthly rather than waiting for the annual GSTR-9C—small discrepancies compound quickly.
  • Maintain a vendor compliance tracker, flagging suppliers who consistently file late.
  • Use accounting software with built-in GSTR-2B matching wherever possible to reduce manual effort.
  • Keep a clear audit trail of follow-up communications with non-compliant vendors.

A disciplined monthly reconciliation process is the single biggest factor in avoiding GST notices related to ITC mismatches. If this is consuming too much of your team's bandwidth, our GST consultancy service can take this off your plate entirely.
